Introduction to ITR-V

Income Tax Return Verification i.e. ITR-V form is a PDF document generated immediately after e-filing and serves as an acknowledgement for successful Income Tax Return.

ITR-V essentially contains the following information:

  1. Your personal information (name, date of birth, and address).
  2. Date of e-filing.
  3. E-filing acknowledgement number.
  4. Summary of your Income and deductions claimed.
  5. Total tax paid.
  6. Amount of refund claimed, if any.

How to View ITR-V or Download ITR-V?

After you e-file Income Tax Return, you will receive an attachment in an email from donotreply@incometaxefiling.gov.in which is from the Income Tax Department.You can download and save the attachment of ITR-V.

You can also view or download ITR-V form from the Income tax website in the following ways:

  1. Go to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
  2. Login to your account. If you are not a registered user, perform the following steps.
  3. I. Click Register. The registration form is displayed.
  4. II. Complete the form and click Submit. All the fields marked with *are mandatory. You will receive an email in your Inbox registered while filing the form.
  5. III. Click the link in the email to activate. The registration is successfully completed.
  6. Go to View Returns / Forms in the dashboard section.
  7. Click the acknowledgement number for the assessment year of which you want to view ITR-V.
  8. From Downloads/ Status Description, click ITR-V/ Acknowledgement and save your ITR-V. The ITR-V form is saved in your system.

How to Open ITR-V?

ITR- V is a password protected PDF file. The password is a combination of Permanent Account Number (PAN) in lowercase letters and Date of Birth. For example, if your PAN is ABCDE1234F and Date of Birth is 1st-June-1986 (01-06-1986), the password will be abcde1234f01061986.

How to Send ITR-V to CPC, Bangalore?

You must retrieve your ITR-V and send the self-attested copy to the Income Tax Department- CPC Bangalore, Karnataka, India within 120 days from the date of your e-filing without paying any penalty.

Perform the following steps for sending your ITR-V acknowledgement form to CPC, Bengaluru.

  1. Open your ITR-V, take a print of the document and sign it across.
  2. Enclose the signed ITR-V in an A4 size envelope. Please do not fold the envelope.
  3. Mail this envelope via ordinary or speed post within 120 days to the following CPC Bangalore address.
  4. Income Tax Department – CPC,
  5. Post Box No-1, Electronic City Post Office,
  6. Bangalore - 560100,
  7. Karnataka
  8. Keep a copy of the Acknowledgement (ITR-V) safely.
  9. The Income Tax Department sends the ITR-V receipt in an email by confirming the receipt of signed ITR V. Usually, the Income Tax Department takes 20 to 25 days to inform you the receipt status. This will complete your ITR filing process. Please note that sending the ITR V signed document to Income Tax Department is mandatory. Otherwise, they will treat it as non-filed ITR.However, if you do not receive the ITR-V receipt confirmation within 20-25 days, it is recommended to resend a signed copy by the earliest.

Important! In case, the Income Tax Department doesn’t receive your signed copy within 120 days of e-filing, your ITR will not be considered as e-filed.

How to Verify Your ITR-V Receipt Status?

To find out whether ITR – V has been received by the Income Tax Department,verify the ITR-V receipt status at the Income Tax website.

Perform the following steps to verify the ITR-V receipt status:

  1. Go to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/.
  2. Click ITR-V Receipt Status under Services.
  3. Fill the details by using your PAN or E-filing Acknowledgement Number.
  4. Click Submit and the status is displayed.

What if ITR-V Receipt Status is Not Received?

If the Income Tax Department doesn’t receive your ITR-V receipt status, you need to resend a signed copy of ITR-V to the CPC Bangalore address. The receipt status can be not received due to postal department misplacing your documents

The return filing process gets completed only after ITR-V reaches the Income Tax Department within 120 days. Otherwise, the return will be treated as invalid. Hence, if you have not received any confirmation regarding the receipt of ITR-V, it is highly recommended to resend the signed ITR-V copy to the Income Tax Department.
