How to view Tax Credit Statement - Form 26AS?

Form 26AS is a consolidated tax statement issued to the PAN holders. It is also known as Tax Credit Statement or Annual Tax Statement. It contains information about Tax Deducted at Source, Tax Collected at Source, Advance Tax, Self Assessment Tax, etc deposited by the assessee, Demand / Refund paid and AIR Transactions. Form 26AS is updated on a regular basis as & when you deposit taxes or tax has been deducted / collected.

You must verify that the details provided in your Form 26AS matches with the TDS details provided to you by various deductors. In case there is a mismatch in TDS details shown in Form 26AS, the Income Tax Department will not give you the credit of TDS actually deducted or Tax deposited. Consequently, your eligible refund amount (if any) will get reduced or you may receive a notice of demand of Income Tax from the Income Tax Department. Therefore you must view Form 26AS carefully.

Step-by-Step guide to View Form 26AS (Tax Credit Statement)

Step 1: Go to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.The e-Filing home page is displayed.

    Step 2: Click on 'View Form 26AS' (as shown in the Figure 1 above). You will be required to Login to your account in the next step.

    Step 3: If you already have an account at the Income Tax Website then enter your user ID and password and click on ‘Login’. If you do not have an account then you need to register at the Income Tax Website.

    Step 4: After Login, you will be asked if you want to redirect to the TDS-CPC website. This is a necessary step and you just need to Click 'Confirm' and you will be redirected to the TDS-CPC website.

    Step 5: Click 'View tax credit (Form 26AS)' at the bottom of the page as shown in the Figure 3 below.

    Step 6: Choose the Assessment Year and the format (HTML or PDF) in which you want to view Form 26AS and click on 'View/Download' (as shown in the Figure 4 below).

    In order to download form 26AS, select the format as ‘PDF’. Your Form 26AS PDF will then be available for download on your computer and you can save that file for future reference.

    To simply view the 26AS on the web page, select the format as ‘HTML’.

    How to open TRACES Form 26AS PDF?

    Form 26AS PDF is a password protected file. The default password for opening your Form 26AS is your Date of Birth in the format of MMDDYYYY (no spaces). For e.g. if your Date of Birth is 31-10-1980, your form 26AS password will be 31101980.

    Once you open the form 26AS after entering the password it will look like the sample shown in Figure 5 below.
